AARP (formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons), is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to addressing the needs and interests of persons 50 and older. Through information and education, advocacy and service, AARP seeks to enhance the quality of life for all by promoting independence, dignity and purpose.

  • Driver Safety Program – The Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today's roads.  Michigan permits auto insurance companies to offer a discount to drivers over 50 years-of-age who successfully complete the course (check with your agent to see if your company offers this discount). The D.E.E.R. Center offers the Driver Safety Program several times a year at the Isabella County Commission on Aging (see link below). The course can also be taken on-line at the AARP web site link below.

logoNational Highway Traffic Safety Administration - NHTSA, under the U.S. Department of Transportation, is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. This is accomplished by setting and enforcing safety performance standards for motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment, and through grants to state and local governments to enable them to conduct effective local highway safety programs. It also conducts research on driver behavior and traffic safety, to develop the most efficient and effective means of bringing about safety improvements. The Model Driver Screening and Evaluation Program  is a three-volume document describing a model for new driver screening and evaluation program for older people.

Physician's Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers
THIS IS A MUST READ FOR PROVIDERSThese guidelines help physicians to medically assess the ability of older drivers to continue driving. This resource, developed by the AMA in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, includes current screening laws and regulations from all 50 states (May 2003) as well as a comprehensive list of diseases which may impair driving.

  • How’s My Driving? Simple Tips for Maintaining Driving Skills, is a brochure that provides resources and information to help older drivers stay
    safely behind the wheel. It was developed by The Partnership for Family
    Safety, a cooperative effort involving the Michigan State Police, Meijer Stores
    and the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians (MAPF), to provide safety prevention education to Michigan citizens.  Free copies of the brochure are available at any of the Meijer Pharmacies and at offices of family physician members of the MAPF.  An electronic version is also available on the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians' web site at www.mafp.com and the Michigan State Police web site at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ElderlyDriving_0909_84709_7.pdf.
